The RICS Podcast

Content strategy · Audience insight · Editorial direction · Multi-channel marketing

I owned the content strategy and editorial delivery of RICS's established weekly podcast, translating organisational objectives and audience insight into relevant industry conversations.

My remit covered editorial commissioning, topic development, guest outreach, production direction, stakeholder coordination and multi-channel promotion, working with internal teams and external creative and production partners throughout.

Strategy

Turning organisational priorities into a weekly content programme.

Each podcast episode needed to support at least one of RICS's four strategic priorities, with many addressing more than one:

  • strengthening trust in the profession
  • enhancing member value
  • leading on sustainability, and
  • supporting a diverse next generation

I used these priorities to assess potential topics, identify relevant industry voices and develop editorial angles that could offer genuine value to a professional surveying audience spanning industry, members and wider built environment stakeholders.

The challenge was not simply finding subjects relevant to surveying, but identifying the question, tension or emerging issue that would make each conversation worth listening to.

Audience

Using insight to keep content relevant and authoritative.

I monitored episode performance to understand audience behaviour and guide ongoing editorial and promotional decisions.

Episodes typically generated 700–1,200 downloads within the first 24 hours, followed by more gradual growth over the remainder of the week. This pointed to a responsive core audience and made the release window particularly important, shaping how I planned teasers, launch promotion and cross-channel activity.

Editorial credibility was equally important. Depending on the subject, I coordinated consultation and fact-checking with senior RICS professionals, including Standards and Regulation Board and Governing Board members, to ensure conversations were accurate, relevant and appropriately positioned.

Distribution

Extending the reach of each episode.

Promotion was an integral part of the content strategy. Episodes were distributed primarily through Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music, with promotion across email, social and web.

Monthly member round-ups helped audiences know what was coming, while relevant episodes were promoted through RICS's learning platforms, particularly where they offered member CPD.

I adapted promotion to the topic and audience, using LinkedIn for the core professional audience, Instagram for younger audiences, and cross-promotion with relevant events and consultations.

This meant thinking beyond the weekly publication to extend the value of each conversation across channels and touchpoints, while keeping content optimised and discoverable.

Agency

Connecting teams and content.

I worked with the external production partner Podcast Labs, preparing briefs, reviewing outputs and directing production edits to keep delivery aligned with the content strategy.

Internally, I joined weekly scrums with the RICS Journal's editorial team, while bi-monthly sessions with creative agency Sunday created opportunities to connect the podcast with Modus, RICS's flagship publication, and identify areas for crossover between the two content programmes.

The bigger picture

Bringing strategy, content and distribution together.

The podcast brought together content strategy, audience insight, multi-channel promotion and performance optimisation within a complex professional environment.

Beyond weekly delivery, the role required me to connect organisational objectives with relevant industry conversations, coordinate internal and external stakeholders, and identify opportunities for the podcast to contribute to RICS's wider content ecosystem.
